Researchers seek input from pilots and aircraft owners

Researchers at Purdue University are looking for pilots to participate in a new study on equipment that transmits an aircraft’s position to air traffic control or other aircraft, such as ADS-B-Out.

The purpose of the study, known as “Electronic Conspicuity Technology for Aircraft Operating in the National Airspace System,” is to “gather insight into the opinions and concerns of aircraft owners and pilots regarding the potential requirement of electronic conspicuity technology,” according to the researchers.

Electronic conspicuity technology is any equipment that transmits an aircraft’s position information — position, altitude, velocity, heading — to air traffic control or other aircraft equipped to receive.

A popular example of electronic conspicuity technology is ADS-B Out; however, other types of technology may provide similar capabilities, the researchers said, noting this could range from equipment installed on your aircraft to the use of common cell phone technology.

The researchers hope to get more than 500 people to complete the survey, which takes about 10 minutes.

Individual survey results are anonymous, the researchers added.
